I guess you could say that I've been baking cakes for about 20 years. Over half my life! When I was a girl, my grandmother would always get me to bake a cake for her when her friends came over to visit. I was only making boxed cake mixes, but they all agreed I made some of the best cakes they had ever tasted. Even back then I would use an ordinary spatula to make swirls and peaks in the frosting to give my cakes a little flair. It wasn't much, but my efforts always seemed to impress folks.
Not long after the Tool Man and I married in 2001, I attempted to "decorate" my first cake. It was one of those classic American flag cakes you always see around the Fourth of July. You know the ones covered in whipped topping that have strawberries for stripes and blueberries for stars? So I bought a decorating tip, a pastry bag, and a Wilton instruction book, and I taught myself how to pipe a simple star border. Well, with one successful cake under my belt, I slowly began adding more decorating techniques to my repertoire. I've made many a cake since then. Some have been hits, and some have been misses. Some very impressive, some just plain ugly! Some easy, and some that have brought me to tears (how silly!) Some that were fun to make, and some that made me vow I'd never make another one. I get decorating ideas from magazines, online, or from photos. I've also picked up more tips and techniques by watching cake decorating shows on TV. Learning how to make and use fondant in my decorating has opened up many decorating possibilities for me. I've also begun to incorporate my painting skills into my cake decorating. As my decorating skills have increased, so has the demand for my cakes, and recently I have had the opportunity to open my very own special-order bakery!
