Everyone who hears these words of Mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. Matthew 7:24-25

Sew Much Fun

I don’t have to tell y’all how hot it’s been lately.  Scorching!

In heat like this it’s hard to kick the monkeys outside to play in the afternoons, so I’ve been trying to supply them with a few activities to keep them busy (and cool) inside the house.  And by activities, I mean something besides TV and video games.

Ty is usually content to play independently with his Legos, Zoobs, Gears or other building sets.  He has no problems entertaining himself, building all kinds of wacky contraptions from fishing poles to mini amusement parks.

Lucy on the other hand, is a high-maintenance, hands-on kind of girl.  She wants my full, complete, undivided attention at all times, so keeping her occupied is a challenge.

Recently Lucy has expressed quite a bit of interest in learning to sew.  {Insert my happy face here.}

I jumped at the opportunity to introduce Lucy to the world of sewing!  Last week we began our “lessons,” and Lucy is loving every minute of it.  I think I may have created a sewing monster.  She begs to work on projects every day.

IMG_5779 (800x529)

The first skill we started with was sewing with a needle.  I found a neat sewing kit at Michaels for a DIY doll.  The kit included precut felt pieces with needle holes already punched in them –perfect for a beginner!

IMG_5780 (2) (800x533)

Lucy worked with embroidery floss and a yarn needle which were easier for her little fingers to grasp than a typical needle and sewing thread.  Of course I had to help Lucy with threading the needle and knotting the string, but she quickly caught on to the rhythmic, in-and-out motion of using a needle.

IMG_5783 (2) (800x534)

The doll project is taking a little longer than either one of us anticipated, but that hasn’t dimmed Lucy’s enthusiasm for sewing.  I’m proud of her for being patient with the process.  She hasn’t complained one time about being tired or bored, which indicates to me that she truly loves the craft.

Even though we are still working on the doll, I decided to go ahead and let Lucy begin working with the sewing machine.

She.  Loves.  It.

I‘m teaching her on the machine that I learned on about 12 years ago.  It’s a simple, no-bells-and-whistles machine with only straight and zigzag stiches.  Nothing fancy to confuse her.

The first thing we did was discuss some safety tips.  (Wouldn’t want anyone sewing her fingers together now, would we?)  Next I pointed out the main parts of the machine:  the presser foot, hand wheel, needle, bobbin, needle position switch, reverse lever, and foot pedal.  I decided not to teach her how to thread the machine yet. Instead I focused on teaching her to “drive” the machine.  A tip I read online was to let her begin by sewing on paper without using thread.  This worked great.  I drew lines on the paper (straight, curved, and zigzag) and let her practice following the lines.  The needle poked neat holes in the paper, so Lucy could easily see where she was going.

IMG_5788 (800x533) (2)

Lucy worked nearly an hour with the paper, practicing how to guide material, sew on curves, turn corners, regulate pedal speed, and reinforce stitches.  I really was surprised at how diligently she worked.  Once again I expected her to get bored with the project, but this little girl stuck with it.

It’s so much fun to be able to share my sewing hobby with Lucy.  This week I took her to the fabric store with me where she pranced all over the store, squealing with excitement at how cute every single bolt was.  I’m afraid I see a fabric addiction in her future.

I hope to post some pictures of Lucy’s first completed projects soon.  She and I have both been busy sewing this week (which explains the reason why my house is such a wreck.)  I’ve been feeling the pressure to sew and embroider as much as possible before we start back to school.  I’ve finally had the foresight to work on fall outfits for the girls in advance, so that when the seasons do change I will already have some cute, new duds hanging in the closet for them.  Maybe I’ll share a fall fashion show with y’all in the near future.

Nursery Reveal

As promised I’m coming to you today with a grand tour of the newly completed (almost) nursery.

The day I found out that I was having another girl, I began browsing the internet, particularly Pinterest, for nursery ideas. (Miss Lucy never did get a nursery, and her big girl room is still unfinished – insert sad face – so I was determined to get it right this time.)

Eventually, I found my way to fabric websites, searching through hundreds of designs for inspiration.  I never would have guessed I’d go for such a lively color palette, but I was soon attracted to this adorable red and aqua Red Riding Hood fabric by Riley Blake Designs.

The only problem with this fabric was that, apparently, a lot of other people were attracted to it as well.  Almost every website I checked was out of stock.  Finally, I found a little shop in Idaho with just enough yardage for me to work with, so I ordered it immediately.  The fabric accounted for the bulk of my decorating expenses.  I’m working on an extremely limited budget, so I had to get creative, filling the rest of the space with some treasured finds, handmade items, and sale pieces.

IMG_9247 (2) (611x800)

I am using the same crib that both Ty and Lucy slept in.  If I had been brave enough, I would have painted it a glossy white, but I just couldn’t bring myself to do it.  I think it works OK as is, though.  To dress the crib, I decided to make a layered, ruffled skirt – definitely the most labor intensive project of the whole nursery!  All those ruffles added up to a lot of work, but I think the results were worth it.  I wasn’t too worried about making bumper pads this time.  OK, maybe I was too lazy to worry about it.  They do make changing the crib sheet a murderous task.  Anyway, I opted to make just one monogrammed pad to go along the back rail.

IMG_9283 (2) (532x800)

I searched online for several weeks for a rug to go in the nursery.  Nothing!  Well, nothing in my price range anyway.  But wouldn’t you know it, I was wondering through Target one day and found an aqua, shag rug on sale.  It was the perfect color, size, and price.  Woo hoo!

I knew I needed something substantial for the blank wall behind the crib.  A few months back, the Tool Man brought home some scraps of 1x12’s.  He knew I’d find a use for them.  Got to love a man who can see the potential in junk!  So I pulled the scraps out of the barn, knocked the dust off of them, and painted some images from the Red Riding Hood fabric on each one.  I thought it was a nice way to incorporate more of the theme into the room.

IMG_9272 (2) (800x784)

IMG_9273 (2) (800x575)

IMG_9274 (2) (589x800)

Instead of a traditional mobile to hang over the crib, I opted for the more frugal, stylish, pompom “chandelier.”

IMG_9277 (2) (800x715)

Did you notice the rocker in the corner?  It doesn’t really belong in the nursery, but I stuck it in here for the time being.  In the meantime, Lucy is using it for her babies.  She even remembered to set up her baby monitor nearby.  Such a little mama.

IMG_9267 (2) (543x800)

Hands down, the greatest single baby item that I’ve ever owned is definitely my beloved Boppy.  Being a nursing mother, I don’t think I could make it without it.  I love this pillow! The Boppy covers that I used in the past were very worn, but rather than buying a new, generic one, I wanted to make a cover to coordinate with the nursery.   Luckily, I found a super easy tutorial online for a zippered Boppy cover, and I was able to whip this one out in less than an hour.  I chose this white, floral fabric for one side and a soft, red minky for the other.  I’m so happy with how it turned out.  Boppy and I will be spending many hours together over the next couple years.

IMG_9286 (2) (800x541)

On my trip to Canton back in May, I picked up this metal “T” to use in the nursery.  I decided to kick it up a notch by pairing it with this chevron background made from repurposed pallets.  Thanks again, Tool Man, for bringing home junk!

IMG_9265 (2) (684x800)

IMG_9266 (2) (533x800)

Here are a couple of more examples of the budget-minded décor.  The lamp was a clearance find at Hobby Lobby.  Originally, I intended to replace the shade, but the green actually coordinated rather well with the fabric, so I left it as is.  The table was absolutely free…a dumpster find.  Just some sandpaper and paint was all it took to transform it from trash to toadstool.  Definitely one my favorite pieces in the room!

IMG_9289 (2) (570x800)

IMG_9292 (2) (800x621)

A pint-sized pillow with pompom trim cozies up the rocker.  I was so excited when I found this toadstool applique.  It’s perfect for the room.

IMG_9258 (2) (800x533)

This is the one wall of the room that I would consider unfinished.  I plan on adding a few more items to the shelves and hanging a couple of things on the wall.

IMG_9254 (2) (533x800)

I still have the changing table that I purchased with the crib, but it is such a uni-tasker.  I really needed something that would function not only as a changing table but would add a lot of storage to the space as well.  Luckily for me, my mom had an extra dresser that she didn’t need.  It was an awful, blonde wood with equally awful, brass drawer pulls.  A little sanding, a little painting, a changing pad, and voila!  An adorable, functional changing table.  Each and every one of the 14 drawers is crammed full of baby pretties.

IMG_9263 (2) (533x800)

And for those of you who may not have heard, sweet girl does have a name already…

IMG_9324 (2) (800x473)

My baby shoes…

IMG_9326 (2) (800x640)

Another treasure from Canton…  I picked up this tin ceiling tile for only $2.  After receiving a makeover, it found a place in the nursery as a fun little chalkboard.

IMG_9308 (2) (533x800)

Below the chalkboard a perfectly, polka dotted, bag waits to catch dirty laundry.

IMG_9307 (2) (603x800)

The only things that’s missing in this room is Miss Tacy Mae.  And it looks like she’ll be here sooner than later!!!

More Fashion

Hi there!  Just popping in to share a few more pics of some dresses I’ve sewn for Lucy.

This first dress is one that I made this spring.  The bodice of the dress is shirred using elastic thread, a technique I first learned about when I made this dress for Lucy a couple of years ago.  The elastic thread yields such impressive results.  My mom almost didn’t believe me when I told her that I made this dress, but really, I did!

IMG_2172 (2) (533x800)

IMG_2174 (2) (533x800)

Next, I want to show y’all the Halloween frock I made Lucy.  Let me start by saying that she was a more-than-willing participant in this photo shoot.  There’s a first time for everything, I guess!

IMG_2205 (2) (557x800)

I bought these boots for Lucy this weekend at Target.  She loves them!!!  She actually got two new pair of shoes, and on our way home from the store she had to try on both pairs.  What can I say?  The girl loves her shoes.

Lucy insisted that I take a picture of her back.

IMG_2187 (2) (533x800)

You may have noticed that this is a pillowcase dress.  OK, so I didn’t actually use a pillowcase, but the dress is made the same way.  I added the ruffle across the bottom for little interest.  For the shoulder ties, instead of using ribbons, I made a drawstring from coordinating fabric, ran it through the neckline, and tied it on one shoulder.

IMG_2194 (3) (533x800)

I tried to play around with editing these photos, but I really need a better program on my computer.  I got a new laptop for Christmas last year and have yet to install any photo editing software on it.

IMG_2194 (2) (533x800)

IMG_2207 (2) (533x800)

Love, love, love this picture!!!  Lucy could so be on that show “Toddlers & Tiaras.”  She’s certainly got the looks…and the attitude!

Fashion Show–Part 1

Perhaps I was a bit naïve to think I could snap a picture of Lucy in all of her new holiday frocks in one sitting.  Not happening!!  So let’s just take things one step at a time, shall we?

We’ll start our little fashion show with a Halloween t-shirt I embroidered for Lucy.  I downloaded this candy corn pattern from Planet Applique. (By the way, if you have a machine, P.A. has some really cute appliques at really good prices.  You should check it out.)

IMG_2134 (2) (531x800)

This applique came plain, but I added the “Boo Y’all” text to “southern-ize” it.  Some of you may remember my other “Boo Y’all” project I made last year.  You can check that out here.

This is a prime example of why I had to keep the photo shoot short and sweet.  A first-class meltdown for no apparent reason.

IMG_2139 (2) (533x800)

When her crying jag was over, Lucy decided she wanted an Eggo.

IMG_2141 (2) (533x800)

“I do it myself.”  Although, she’s not quite strong enough to push the slider (I don’t know what the correct term is) all the way down by herself.

IMG_2144 (2) (800x533)

How do you like that hair accessory?  Looks like a gi-normous orange spider landed on her head.  I wasn’t sure that Lucy would go for it.  She’s never really worn a head band before.  But apparently she didn’t mind it, because she wore it until time for bed.

IMG_2147 (2) (533x800)

I took advantage of the fact that she was distracted by food to snap a few more pictures of her.

IMG_2148 (2) (533x800)

IMG_2163 (2) (800x533)

Maybe next week I’ll get brave enough to try another photo shoot with Lucy.  I also have another cake I need to share with y’all, so check back soon.

My Latest Projects

I mentioned to y’all earlier that I’ve been doing a little crafting lately.  Here are a couple of the projects I whipped up last week.

First are these lovely, painted Christmas pillows.

IMG_2037 (2) (800x361)

I wish I could say that these were my original idea, but I can’t. I saw these beautiful pillows at Dear Lillie and instantly fell in love, so I had to make a pair for myself.

IMG_2034 (533x800)

IMG_2036 (2) (533x800)

I’ve also been working on another project, but I can’t really show you much yet.  It’s a gift, and I wouldn’t want to give too much away.  So, a tease will have to do for now.

IMG_2044 (2) (800x533)

I’ve also been doing a little sewing for Lucy.  I managed to complete ensembles for Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.  Woo hoo!  It’s not like me to finish something early.  Hopefully, I can catch Lucy in the right mood, and post a little fashion show for y’all soon, but I make no promises….

Home Tour–Guest Bath

Let me start by saying a big “THANK YOU” to everyone who left comments on the Kitchen Tour post.  That definitely has been my most popular post since starting this blog, and it has been so much fun getting to read your reactions to the space.  I hope that y’all will enjoy the next tour equally as much.

I have to admit that I sort of freaked out a little bit when it came to deciding which room to share with y’all next.  There aren’t many rooms in my home that I would look at and say, “Yes, this room is complete.  It’s what I have envisioned for the space, and I’m eager to share it with the world.”  Luckily, the guest bath did come to mind.  It is probably the one room in our home which I consider to be the most near complete, and that is likely due to the fact that it is the smallest room in the house.

Did I mention that we will have a tour guide today?  OK Lucy, open the door.

IMG_1973 (2) (533x800)

Wait!

Before we go inside, let’s take a look at the entrance, shall we.  Remember the old hotel that I told you about in the kitchen post.  Well, I want to point out a couple of features that we scored from up there – the glass paneled door and the “Bath” sign.

This old sign just may be my favorite part of this room.

IMG_1974 (2) (800x532)

OK, now we can go in.

Not the most intriguing subject matter here, but let’s face it, this is kind of an important part of the bathroom…

IMG_1947 (2) (533x800)

The artwork above the toilet was created by yours truly.  These pieces are a couple of projects that I had to do for a basic design course in college.  I thought the black and white nature of the prints matched well with the space.

IMG_1966 (2) (533x800)

How’s this for a no-sew café curtain?  I just ran a length of 1/8” ribbon through the holes in the eyelet to make a rod pocket to hang this curtain.

IMG_1969 (2) (800x533)

IMG_1937 (2) (534x800)

Can you guess what I used to make this shelf?…

IMG_1941 (2) (521x800)

…A discarded drawer that I found at a flea market.  Grand total - $2!

IMG_1943 (2) (736x800)

I gave the drawer coat of white paint, distressed it a little, of course, then covered the back with some fabric scraps I had left over from the window treatment.  I think it’s the perfect touch of shabby “chic-ness.”

IMG_1962 (2) (533x800)

I picked up this mirror at flea market for $10.  The glass has a lot of spots on it where the silver is chipping off the back, but I don’t mind. (So that’s not toothpaste splatters all over the glass! Ha ha.)  All I did to the mirror was clean it up a bit and paint the frame black.

IMG_1944 (2) (533x800)

Now, check out the vanity.  I was determined not to have a standard, run-of-the-mill cabinet in here.  I searched high and low at every antique store and flea market within a 100 mile radius looking for the perfect piece.  After months of looking, I finally stumbled across this dry sink.  It was the perfect size, and I loved the white marble top.  Although, it took a lot of guts to get out the saw and cut a whole in that beautiful marble in order to install the sink.  Eek!

  IMG_1961 (2) (533x800)

Isn’t this the most adorable faucet ever.  I love the charm it adds to the room!

IMG_1959 (2) (800x534)

This cabinet is yet another flea market find, perfect for corralling towels and toiletry items.

IMG_1939 (2) (533x800)

Well, that wraps up the tour for today.  Hope you enjoyed our visit to the “throne room.” Hee hee.
